Leeds City Council is responsible for the provision of services to the people of one of the UK’s fastest growing and most diverse cities. Underpinning this is an ambitious long-term vision for Leeds to be firmly positioned as a world-class city.
The fulfilment of the city’s strategic vision has been clearly identified as resting on the calibre and farsightedness of current and future leaders throughout the corporation.
As the UK’s second-largest metropolitan authority (with over 35,000 staff) its departmental and service managers are instrumental in the running of one of the UK’s larger corporate bodies, across both the public and private sector. To ensure they were armed with the skills necessary to achieve this a high-profile managerial development scheme was carefully developed.
The challenge facing LCC was to ensure that the outcomes of this scheme could be clearly evaluated and effective changes implemented where necessary – both for individuals and he scheme as a whole. Clear indications were required as to whether outcomes merited the investment and, crucially, if it would produce a generation of leaders capable of fulfilling the ambitious vision for Leeds’ future.
Nunwood’s HR and training professionals, put in place a continuous 360˚ appraisal system. This relied on each manager receiving feedback, either on paper or via the web, from a number of their colleagues at all levels. The findings gathered are then analysed by the Global Insight team at the overall and individual level prior to and after participation on the development scheme to give a clear assessment of the impact on managerial competencies.
Results are quickly and securely disseminated throughout the organisation using a specially developed version of Nunwood’s Fizz core reporting platform. This multi-level system provides everything from personal 360˚ appraisal reports to an ongoing evaluation of the impact of the programme as a whole in supporting the corporation’s vision for the future.
